Court Remands 4 UNILAG Undergraduates Over Cultism

An Ebute-metta Chief Magistate's Court, has ordered the remand of four Undergraduates of University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, over alleged involvement in cultism.

The undergraduates are: Raheem Yusuf, 21, Adedoyin Adeyemi Abraham,24, Olanrewaju Idowu, 36, and 24 year-old Safraini Oluyemi Peters.

They were arraigned before Chief Magistate Oluwayemisi Adelaja led-court, on two counts charge bordering on conspiracy to cause breach of public peace and belonging to an unlawful and secret society, known as Aloral Bucania.

The police from State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba, of Lagos State Police Command, alleged in a charge marked D/45/2016, the the four Undergraduates, who are members of an unlawful society known as Aloral Bucania, had on August 4, 2016, at about 9.30am, at Room 318, Biobaku Hall of UNILAG, conspired among themselves to commit an offence likely to cause breach of public peace.

The prosecutor, Adebayo Oladele, informed the court that the offenses are contrary to and punishable under sections 409 and 42(a)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

The four Undergraduates however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Consequently, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A. Okubule, who stood in for Chief Magistrate Adelaja, admitted bail to the defendants in the sum of N200, 000
with two sureties each.

The sureties according to the magistrate, must show to court evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government, affidavit of livelihood, and must be residents of the state.

The court however ordered that the four Undergraduates be remanded in Prison's custody pending the perfection of the bail conditions, while adjourned the matter till September 26, for trial.
