Customary Judges gets trained

Lagos state government has put smiles on the faces of Customary Court judges as they were assured of prompt payment of their salaries henceforth.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice ‎, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem gave the assurance in a key note address delivered at a one day workshop for Customary Court Judges in the State.
The workshop organised by the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission was themed "The Role of Customary Court Judges in the Nation's Judicial System".
The Attorney General who was represented by the Solicitor General, Funmi Odunlami said it has come to the knowledge of the State Executive that Local Governments have not been regular in the timely payments of the judges saying that their attitude was capable of dampening the morale of the judges.
He assured them that "the State Executive is looking into ways of putting a stop to such morale dampening treatment and it shall soon come up with a lasting solution".
The Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade who was represented by Justice Taofikat Oyekan-Abdulai reminded the judges that the state has been a pace setter in administration of justice and urged to always uphold the truth.
Justice Atilade who reminded them that customary courts have limited jurisdiction counselled the judges to dispense justice fairly and without fair or favour.
She advised that the tradition of the people in their locality should guide then when dispensing justice as they were not to apply common law in all cases before them.
The Executive Secretary of the State Judicial Service Commission, Ayodele Odugbesan had earlier urged local governments to fulfill their obligations of ensuring prompt payment of salaries to the judges.
Odugbesan acknowledged the expectations of the council areas which expected the court to be revenue generating institutions.
She explained that customary courts are not empowered to generate funds for local government councils and urged for prompt payment of the salaries of the judges.
