Lekki Trade Zone Panel; first sitting

The tribunal set up on the Lekki Zone civil disturbance heard that the presence of too many people posing as leaders of the different communities in the zone has remained a challenge and responsible for the frequent civil disturbance in the area.

A representative of Lekki World Wide Investment, Mr. Kamal Raji made this assertion in his testimony before the panel presided by Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi.
Mr. Raji told the panel that it has been difficult for them to recognise who is the authentic representative of the different communities.
He said the issue of different representatives has remained one of the major challenges they were having with the communities in the area.
"We've had many groups coming forward claiming to be representative of the community. Its difficult when we have different group of people asking for compensation.
Mr. Raji therefore urged the panel to assist in identifying genuine leaders of the different communities in their recommendation to the government.
Another representative of one of the affected communities in the Lekki crisis, Alhaji Ismail Animashaun, lamented what he termed "failure on the part of the government in fulfilling the promises made to the people of Lekki-Epe International Airport".
Mr. Animashaun who said he was representing Lekki- Epe International Airport, tabled a memorandum of understanding with the government before the tribunal.
He told the panel that in spite of governor fashola adminstration approved ‎700 hectares of land for their resettlement nine months ago, peace has continued to elude them as they have not been able to settle in one place.
He also identify security as a major challenge facing the over 182 villages in the area
Animashaun prayed the panel to assist in ensuring that a people oriented security mechanism is put in place in the area "so that the problem of vandalism and incessant attacks on staff of the company or government officials is eradicated".
"Now people just wander on our land without our permission and this pose a serious threat to our existence", he stressed.
He also lamented that government has refused to vacate a company that refused to quit the area in spite of having completed their road project.
‎He claimed that workers of the company have been collecting toll on the road after completion.
He said it was sad that after complaining to the government, they are yet to see any changes till date".
Otunba Abiodun Bisiriyu who represented Epe Lagoon Area Development Association alleged that there have been several cases of breaches of mutual agreement on the government part.
He also stated that the youth are being brain-washed and instigated against the government in their outlook to all government's policies.
Bisiriyu recommended that the government must actively responsive and responsible to the yearnings and aspirations of the affected communities and the affected people.
"There is need to urgently put in place a seated security to monitor, probe or task force in place as well as employing the service of independent loyal indigenes to probe into the political incitement and reasons for the action".
All these will be a phenomenal end to civil disturbances within the Lekki Free Trade Zone if done", he said.
