Surety for dismissed police officer remanded

A Lagos Federal High Court, has ordered the remand of one Adeleye Oduniyi, who stood surety for a dismissed police officer, Victor Banor, who is facing criminal charges, in prisons custody.
The court presided over by Justice Okon Abang ordered the remand of the surety to the dismissed police officer in prison custody after Banor failed to appear in court for his trial.
The dismissed police officer is being tried for allegedly impersonating five Commissioners of Police, and diverting about N20 million, the salaries of various police officers after his dismissal from the Force.
At the resumed hearing, the Police Prosecutor, Mr. Justin Enang, informed the court that Banor had jumped the bail of N20m with two sureties in the sum of N10m each, granted him by the court on May 15, 2015.
Justice Abang, who had earlier issued a bench warrant against Banor, ordered Oduniyi to be remanded in prison in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
The matter has been adjourned till December 4, 2015 for further proceedings in the case.
In the charge against the dismissed police officer, the police alleged that he stole a vehicle, kept at the station as an exhibit in a criminal matter under investigation while he was serving at the Umunede Police Division in Delta State.
The prosecutor, Enang, had informed the court that Banor was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, after the alleged stealing. He added that after his dismissal, he allegedly impersonated four Commissioners of Police, including that of Enugu, Lagos, Kogi and Awka, by forging the CPs' identify cards.
The dismissed police officer was also charged with the offences bordering on forgery and illegal possession of firearms.
In a counter-affidavit to a fundamental rights enforcement suit earlier filed by Banor against the police, Enang had alleged that the dismissed police officer diverted salaries of various policemen running into N20m.
Enang had said; "After the Officer-in-Charge of the Command’s Mechanised Salary Section retired, the applicant assumed office as the O/C MSS. And that while holding this position that in March 2011, he allegedly absconded with the money.
“While absconding from office, the applicant dropped a note stating that nobody should look for him because he had resigned to join his militant groups at the creeks of the Niger Delta region. When he was arrested, he claimed to be a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, flashing a police warrant card and demanding to be shown respect as a “Senior Officer”.
"Photocopies of forged police Identity Cards were found on him, with “CSP” Afamefuna Banor V. and “W/SGT” Hannah Markson Banor, among other names.
"The police further found badges and insignia of a Deputy Commissioner of Police at his home, and he absconded with a Police Barretta Pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition."
