Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Crisis: Court remands ex President General

A 59 year old man Maurice Fangnon who allegedly had an unlawful assembly and was also found with offensive weapons in his possession which caused fear in his neighbourhood was arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.            
The defendant, who claims to be a professor was issued a bench warrant on June 20, alongside two others, a former President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Uzoije Ukaumunna and Ganiyu Ola, by Magistrate Mrs Olufunke  Oshin.                                                                                                                                              
The warrant of arrest was sequel to their failure to appear before the Court after they were served summons over alleged fear that they caused in their neighborhood.                                    
The order was issued after the police filed a charge before the court against the defendants for allegedly causing fear on persons in his neighborhood with view to disturb public peace.                 
The defendant and others who are still at large were alleged to have flouted court’s order, in suit No. MISC /MCA/017/2016.                                                                                                                    
In the order marked as Charge No. A/41/2016, dated June 20, 2016, the magistrate ordered the Commissioner of Police is to bring the defendant before the court on the next adjourned date to come and give explanation to the complaint made by one Lee Asagba of Maritime.
However Fangnon, who has been hiding was later apprehended by the police on Tuesday and was charged before the Court on a four count charge, bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and possession of offensive weapons and breach of peace preferred against him.                                                                                                                                     
The police prosecutor A. S. Adebesin, told the court that the defendant and others who are still at large committed the alleged offences on May 31, 2016, at about 10:30pm.                     
He said that the incident occurred at 119, Osho Drive, Olodi Apapa area of the state. Adebesin, alleged that the defendant with intent to commit misdemeanour assembled in an unlawful manner that caused fear on the persons in the neighbourhood, adding that the weapons that were found with the defendant which he could not give satisfactory reasons why they were in his possession are 16 brand new cutlasses, two plastic jar containing a liquid substance suspected to be acid and displayed same in such a manner as to cause terror in his neighbourhood.                                                                                                                      
The prosecutor further stated that Fangnon, on the same date time and place conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by displaying cutlasses and substances suspected to be acid in the public in an attempt to attack members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.                                                                                                                  
According to him, the offences committed is punishable under sections  410, 44, 51 and 166 (d) of the criminal law of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.                                                            
During the arraignment, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against him and Magistrate Oshin, granted him bail in the sum of N 300,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.                                                                                                                                         
She ordered that one of the sureties must be a reputable civil servant of level 12 and show evidence of  three years tax clearance to Lagos state.                                                             
The case has been adjourned till August 28, for mention.                                                                             
Meanwhile the defendant was remanded in Kirikiri Prison custody, as he could not perfect his bail conditions.
